Aphthous ulcers can form on your gums, lips, cheeks and tongue. People get these ulcers from stress, viral infections, injuries or even allergies. People will easily notice when they have these ulcers because they will give them an irritating pain. But regardless of the reasons why these ulcers form, there are home remedies you can use to treat your ulcers so that the inflammation and pain get reduced. The most popular home remedy for aphthous ulcers is baking soda. Since alkaline is in baking soda, it has the ability to neutralize the acids of the ulcers which are irritating it. Baking soda also has antibacterial properties which can kill the bacteria around your ulcers and help it heal more quickly. To use the baking soda, just mix ½ cup of lukewarm water with one teaspoon of baking soda and then rinse your mouth out with it.
If you want a fast alternative to baking soda then try milk of magnesia instead. Milk of magnesia, also known as magnesium hydroxide, is normally consumed to relieve upset stomachs. But if you rinse your mouth with magnesium hydroxide then its antacid properties will eliminate the acids in your mouth which are irritating your sores. Now if your sores are on the outside of your mouth, like on your lips, then you can put some magnesium hydroxide on a cotton swab and apply it directly to the sores up to 4 times per day. If you don’t have any magnesium hydroxide then aloe gel can also work as well. You can obtain aloe as a supplement from your local store or directly from an aloe plant by cutting off one of its leaves. Then just apply the gel to the sore area and then feel the pain slowly go away.
If you are someone who does not have magnesium hydroxide or aloe in their home, then try using tea bags. The alkaline compounds inside tea have the power to neutralize the acids in your mouth that are causing the sores to hurt you. Just soak a tea bag in water and apply it to the sore area. Leave it there for five minutes and you should notice the relief kick in. The idea is to look for home remedies which contain alkaline, antiviral or antacid in it. Some more home remedies like this include sage, hydrogen peroxide, antacid tablets, salt water, and vitamin E.
